Cannot Update Firmware on Samsung SH-S183L DVD Burner on ASUS A8V Deluxe MB
I just purchased a Samsung SH-S183L DVD SATA burner and even though it works, I cannot update the firmware from SB01 to SB02. I have traced it down to a compatibility problem between the burner and my Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard and its VIA VT8237 SATA controller. For firmware updating the "OEM Code" on the burner must be "BE". On my burner the OEM Code shows as "1". I updated the VIA drivers but it did not help. The burner has no such problem on a different computer. Samsung tech support had no explanation, and VIA does not offer tech support other than its forum, where I left a similar message. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Re: Cannot Update Firmware on Samsung SH-S183L DVD Burner on ASUS A8V Deluxe MB
The samsung drives will not update the firmware on just any SATA controller. The SATA controller must be designed to allow the necessary flashing operations and not all are, unfortunately. I have an ASUS with VT8237 SATA controller and have had the same issue. I had to buy a different SATA controller (using a VT6421 chipset - either VT6421A or VT6421L) for it to burn properly. If you have any other computers with SATA you could try to hook it up and see if it will burn or go out and find a cheap compatible SATA controller to do it with. I agree that Samsung is not very helpful about problems with flashing their drives BIOS.
