DVD drive weirdness

Hi all... im not sure if this is post #1 or not, but i cant believe i havnt been on this forum more.. the design section looks particularly tasty...

anyway,
I have a combo DVD/CD RW drive.. whcih burns CDs grand, reads both Cds & DVD grand, but fails trying to burn DVDs about 15 % into the process. Im relatively clueless when it comes to problems liek this, but have tried the following..

uninstall drivers, reboot, reinstall, but no joy!

&

disconnected the IDE cable, uninstall, reinstall, no joy!

any guesses to what might be causing this?

btw the combo drive shows up on my system as 2 drives for some reason..
strange

any help is greatly appreciated

Re: DVD drive weirdness

HI stjohn,
Welcome to the forum.
I will see what I can do. First I want to clarify something. You state you have a COMBO DVD/CD RW. This drive in tech terms means you can play DVD'S and READ and WRITE (BURN) CD's. This is what you are able to do now. This combo drive will not BURN DVD's. You will need a DVD/RW to burn DVD'S. How many CD type devices do you have on your PC?
If I am wrong on what you are saying please reply.
Thanks,
Bill

Re: DVD drive weirdness

are you using an 80 wire ide cable on the drive
have you tried a new 80 wire ide cable
have you updated the firmware
tried a different brand of disk
tried burning at a slower speed
