SD Cards copy SLOW in WinXP
I have no idea about this one and it's driving me crazy...
When trying to copy to an SD card on my computer (the SD reader came preinstalled on my laptop) it takes upwards of 10-15 minutes to copy what is only about 3.x MB of information. However, transferring the same information to the same card from the same computer only using various Linux distributions takes only about 5 seconds. What is going on? Why is windows taking so long to transfer these files? Any insight would be fantastic! |

Re: SD Cards copy SLOW in WinXP
Hi caseymhunt and welcome to TSF
![]() What's your laptop brand and model ? It could indeed be some driver problem. Check whether there are updated drivers on the manufacturer's website. Last edited by justpassingby; 07-17-2007 at 08:36 PM. |

Re: SD Cards copy SLOW in WinXP
It's a Dell Latitude 131L .. however, I have queried many of my coworkers (this is an office environment) and we are all mysteriously experiencing the same effects on different machines.
Poor performance on Windows, amazing performance on Linux. |

Re: Slow SD copy speeds in Windows vs. Linux
No Drivers exist on Dells website for the SD Card reader. Even if there were- that would not explain the proliferation of this problem on multiple systems.

Found this Ricoh Memory Card Drivers for Vista 32-Bit and XP/2K in the drivers list of the Latitude 131L.

Re: Slow SD copy speeds in Windows vs. Linux
I tried the updated driver. No effect- in reality it may have slowed it even further.
As I said though- the Reader is functioning properly but it makes no sense why the same card on the same machine would operate so much faster in a Linux environment. |

Re: Slow SD copy speeds in Windows vs. Linux
A conflict with another device or driver in Windows could explain that, though it would be pretty hard to diagnose. Your antivirus could also come in the way. You'd get better answers contacting Dell or Ricoh's technical support about this.
Try to completely uninstall the device in the device manager and let XP redetect it at next reboot. Direct it to the updated drivers if it fails to install it. Last edited by justpassingby; 07-18-2007 at 02:46 PM. |

Re: Slow SD copy speeds in Windows vs. Linux
Safe I can't say, right I don't know, it seems you're quickly jumping to a conclusion here. There may be things like "Windows 'going to have to deal with it' kind of problems" as there may be "Linux 'going to have to tweak some weird settings for an hour using a command line prompt before the driver installs correctly' kind of problems" but you won't get me to say here which one is better of Linux or Windows, they're just different beasts.
If you want some real answer, contact Dell or Ricoh, then contact MS support with what Dell or Ricoh told you. Could be some background process, some conflicting driver or hardware, some uneeded service, ... Have you tried in safe mode with the network, antivirus and firewall deactivated ? If it gets any better there then it may be some software related issue. Have you tried uninstalling the device completely using the device manager ? There's a ton of things you can do to optimize an XP system, you may find some clues in here : Long Startup Delay!
