Lite-On DL DVD-RW not reading DVD's

Hey all,

My SATA Lite-On DVD-RW recently stopped recognizing DVD's. It has no problems reading CD's (my Halo disc is scratched to high hell but still loads flawlessly), but the DVD's are a whole other story. I can hear the drive spinning and trying, but it's never successful.

I was able to reboot with the Stalker DVD in the drive, then immediately launch the game, and it worked, but the drive was noisier than it should have been, so I quit... Then tried to access the disk from Windows, but the green progress bar along the top takes a ridiculous amount of time, then simply stalls with the smallest fraction of space left to go.

I've been wanting a second optical drive for a while now, but I'm not sure what kind I should go far. I thought Lite-On's were fairly good but I will not be buying another. The two drives I'm considering are:
1) Pioneer
2) Plextor (great reputation, but really worth the extra $50?)

Both these drives are SATA. I'd like to stay with SATA unless there is a really good reason to go back to IDE.

Additionally, if anyone knows how I can get my Lite-On drive to recognize DVD's again, that would be wonderful.

I'm running Vista Home Premium, 32bit.

Thanks!

Pioneer is a good brand, ive got one, its quite..
On your current DVD drive i think your DVD laser might be out of alignment. CD's will read ok because there is an other laser for CD's

Re: Lite-On DL DVD-RW not reading DVD's

Thanks for the quick reply.
I just tried updating the firmware and thought I had some good results (Ali G DVD loaded up, when before it would not). Then tried several other DVD's and no luck. When I threw Ali G in there again, it loaded the menu but then gave a popup saying something about digital copyright (even though this is a retail disc), and to update my video card drivers... gonna give this a shot.
