DVD-ROM and CD-W Drives Not Reading Discs

Computer: Compaq Presario SR1214NX

OS: Windows XP 5.1 SP 2

Drives: Samsung SD-616E and ASUA CRW-4832AS

XP and these drives are part of original equipment for this computer. And they were working until a recent adware/popup infestation. System has been cleaned up now thanks to TSF. It may be just an odd coincidence, but they stopped working at about the same time as the initial adware infection.

Both drives listed in BIOS and Device Manager reports them as functioning properly. However, when I insert a disc into either drive light blinks several times then nothing.

I tried to uninstall and reinstall the drives without success. I removed the upper and lower filters in the registry. I attemtped to upgrade the firmware dor the DVD drive, but that was also unsuccessful.

I don't have any idea what else to try. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: DVD-ROM and CD-W Drives Not Reading Discs

Hi,

This may seem silly, but are all the cables connected correctly and definately working? If this isn't the issue, then the read/write head may be broken.
