DVD Burner won't recognise CDs

My DVD Burner (Sony DRU-800A) won't detect CDs. It can read and burn DVDs, but inserting a CD into the drive gives no response. When I first installed it, it had this problem, unless the CD was in the drive when the computer was turned on. After a reformat, it was able to read CDs until it errored during a Battlefield install. After another reformat, it still won't recognise CDs, even if the disc is in the drive at restart. Any help is appreciated.

they are cheap these days, probably better to replace it

Re: DVD Burner won't recognise CDs

I've already updated firmware, and tried different discs. Thanks anyway.

Re: DVD Burner won't recognise CDs

I can't see any filters,
in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
I see

(Default) REG_SZ DVD/CD-ROM Drives
Class " " CDROM
EnumPropPages32 " " MmSys.Cpl,MediaPropPageProvider
Icon REG_SZ -51
Installer32 REG_SZ storprop.dll,DVDClassInstaller
NoInstallClass REG_SZ 1
SilentInstall REG_SZ 1
Troubleshooter-0 " " hcp://help/tshoot/tsdrive.htm

Am I missing something? Or arnt they there?

Re: DVD Burner won't recognise CDs

Well is there anything left to check, or is it a lost cause?
I'd prefer to try and get it working than replace it, as apart from music, I can use DVDs for whatever I'm after.

Re: DVD Burner won't recognise CDs

you could try cleaning the laser, you can get a cleaner disk but the recommended way is to do it by hand with them selling at around $30 it is usally not worth the effort
