USB Mass Storage Device problems...

Hi guys,

would appreciate some help from you hardware wizards if possible please

I recently noticed that when inserting a removable USB flash device, I get the dreaded 'device not recognized' balloon. This only happens in my front panel ports. In total I have 8 USB ports (4 at the back and 4 at the front) and all are enabled in BIOS.

Now the strange thing is the error only occurs when my card reader is connected and enabled. Just for information, the card reader is part of the Enermax 'The Supreme' Multifunction Panel UC-9FATR2.

I have two spare 9-pin USB headers on my board which control the front 4 USB ports. On one header I have 2 USB ports and on the other, I have the card reader and another USB port as they use the exact same wiring system (VCC, D-, D+, G). All used to work perfectly so this problem is relatively new.

I have tried swapping the devices around but the same happens, I have also tried replacing the USB cabling where possible but that hasn't helped either. When the card reader is either unplugged from the board or I disable its entry (USB Mass Storage) in the Device Management console, all the remaining USB ports work perfectly but when it's enabled only the card reader works.

At present, I'm using a batch file to disable the card reader before using a flash drive....not hugely inconvenient as it only takes a couple of seconds but I would like normal service resumed if possible as it used to work fine.

There are no flags/warnings in the Device Manager and apart from what I've already tried....i'm kinda stumped . As the card reader is part of the multifunction panel, it is the only cable I haven't been able to replace as it has a specific connection to the back of the panel and normal connection to the board so not sure when i can pick up a replacement for that???

Any ideas on what is causing the problem?

Any help would be cool

Hi Nick,

This is strange. The only thing I can think of that you should check is the voltage reading on your +5v. You can use SpeedFan from my sig or better yet check the BIOS readings.

Also, this is a longshot, but if you unplug your secondary hard disk, does this problem happen?

Re: USB Mass Storage Device problems...

Matt may be on to something with the +5V so monitor that and see if it drops below the + or - 5% tolerance.

Is the card reader currently working correctly? Just ask this because if you have not used it recently maybe it developed a problem

Re: USB Mass Storage Device problems...

Thanks for the replies Matt and Doby,

SpeedFan reports the VCC at 4.99v...shall check in BIOS in a minute and will see if disconnecting my slave drive affects things at all.

Also, the card reader works perfectly on its own and when everything's connected...reads/writes without any problems.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Re: USB Mass Storage Device problems...

Ok...have monitored the voltages in BIOS and the 5v varies from 4.999v to 5.026v.

Also, the same behaviour occurs when my secondary IDE is unplugged.
