DVDs Stopped Burning

Hi. I've been using Nero 7 to burn DVDs, and the last two DVDs I tried to burn won't burn. I've been through five or six different DVD-Rs, and it produces a burn error everytime. I doubt that that many DVD-Rs from a new pack could be faulty. I can't see there being a problem with the Nero software, I think it's more likely that it's the DVD-RW drive.

The DVD-RW drive is a Philips DVDR 1628P1, and it has been working fine until now.

I will when the new ones arrive. For the record though, before this problem occurred six DVDs of the same brand (Imation) burned.

I've downloaded both a driver and firmware and I'll update them now.

I set it to the lowest speed and it still won't burn.

Re: DVDs Stopped Burning

until you get it sorted do a test burn first,so if the burn is going to fail you do not lose a disk
check that dma is enabled on the drive and it has not gone to pio mode,it auto goes to pio mode after a certain amount of failed burns compounding the problem

I don't know what DMA is nor how to check if it is enabled. I also don't know what pio mode is.

Re: DVDs Stopped Burning

I also managed to do the pio thing. Sorry about that. Now the thing I'm stuck on is the test burn.

Re: DVDs Stopped Burning

One thing I should add is that the drive has started making a clunking noise when I close it. It's stopped doing it, it was the mouse cable being trapped.

Okay. I did that. I still don't know how to do a test burn though.

I couldn't find that option on Nero Vision 4 (which comes as part of Nero 7 Ultra edition), so I've made a disc image so that I can hopefully find the option to do a test burn that way (plus I'm fed up of having the project re-coded each time).

I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: DVDs Stopped Burning

Nero Express has a 'Simulation' option, so that's the only thing I can see that might run a test burn. I'm trying that.

Re: DVDs Stopped Burning

The burn simulation failed.
I have an AMD Athlon Processor 1.24 GHz and 512MB of RAM (which registers as 496 MB of RAM). I'm running Windows XP SP 2. The hard drive is Western Digital WD2500BB, with 250GB capacity. I'm going to have to shut down and open the computer to view the PSU details.

Re: DVDs Stopped Burning

I decided to try the simulation at a lower speed, and it has completed. I'm going to see whether an actual burn will work at the lower speed.

Re: DVDs Stopped Burning

It burned the DVD at the lower speed. I don't know whether to actually burning with Nero Vision now, or to continue making disc images then burning them. It takes longer doing the latter, but if one burn screws up, I don't have to go through the coding process again.

Re: DVDs Stopped Burning

tick the box for nero to select the burn speed, you will find on the cheaper disks which most on the market are,you will be lucky to get half the speed listed on the disk

The first six discs worked on maximum speed, but after that I couldn't get any working (of the same discs), so I don't think it's a problem with the discs. Either way, they seem to be doing okay on a lower speed.
