Sony DRU-120c not burning CDs

I'm using Windows XP SP2, with a new Sony DRU-120C DVD combo drive, and I've tried MagicISO, Nero, and Winamp to burn data. Each of these freezes in some way or another, and ends up telling me I got an error and the CD burning failed. It will read CDs just fine, and I can copy CD audio to my harddrive as well. Any ideas?

Re: Sony DRU-120c not burning CDs

first off, where is the drive connected to on your motherboard? is it on it's own primary controller as a master?

Second, do you know if IDE drivers or chipset drivers were ever installed on your computer? This would be a classic example of DMA mode being turned off.

A not so hot scenerio would find the drive's internal cache defective which would explain it's ability to read all day long but not write. Have you tried using SIMULATION under Nero?

If your system is bone stock, please provide computer brand and model or motherboard and model along with configuration relating to what drive is plugged into what port.

Re: Sony DRU-120c not burning CDs

I think it's running as slave on a shared controller. Now it's burning CDs, but whenever I put in a CD, it freezes my computer. Weird.

Re: Sony DRU-120c not burning CDs

do you have a second controller that isn't being used on the board? I always reccommend separating hard drives from roms because the hard drive speed gets reduced to to dma level of the rom so if your hard drive is udma/133 it isn't with the rom piggie backed... it's 33 from my memory. you also don't need a special 80 pin cable for the rom. just plug it into the secondary master controller and enable it in bios and set it to auto detect or if there is a preset for cd rom, use it. I am wondering if it's slowed the drive down so much that the drive dma is disabled and you don't have enough bandwidth with udma33 to do anything once you attempt to share it with the rom...
