Hi all,
For some reason my Sony CD-RW (CRX230E) stopped reading discs. I've tried all different kinds, but nothing has worked. I read that maybe Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% may be causing it, but I don't have them on my system anymore. I'm not sure if it's a S/W issue or H/W. Also the Sony site has very little information. Has anyone else had this problem or may know how to fix it? I have WinXP H/E with SP. 2, Intel P3 535 MHz 192mb RAM, 1x Sony CD-RW (CRX230E), 1x Samsung DVD-ROM (SD-608). The computer is a HP Pavilion 8660C. Thanks, Mike Last edited by spifferoo; 12-06-2006 at 02:32 PM. |

Sounds very much like the drive has failed. Is the machine still under warranty? If so return it for repair. If not then get yourself a replacement (get a DVD burner) and install it. To check the drive remove it from the system and connect it to another system. If it works then the problem is probably elsewhere, but if it doesn't then the drive has died.

Does the drive not show up at all or does it simply not read discs? If if doesn't read discs, but shows up in My Computer as a drive AND it does make noises when you insert a disc, you may have a burnt out laser. This seems to happen more often than it should in Sony drives. You may need to invest in a new drive. If it doesn't show up in My Computer, follow dai's link. Also, check your system's BIOS and see if it is detected there. If it isn't, the drive may have a circuitry problem (IDE).
