I can play DVD's but wont recognise audio cds??

Hi,

Come home for the weekend and am on my old mans fairly new PC with Sony CDRWDVD CEX310EE. He's recently got a ipod has been transferring his CD collection onto it but recently its stopped recognising audio cd's.

On my computer the CDRW/DVD drive is showing and it will play dvd's no problem but when an audio cd is put in it wont play and when you explore the cd drive it just comes up blank.....

Any ideas? Help!!

Idea

Sounds like the CD lens is dirty or something, these combined drives have 2 lenses, one for the Cd's and one for the DVDs, thats why it will read one but not the other, try getting a lens cleaning disk and running that to see if it helps, they are like a CD (well they are) but they have brushes on one side that brush the lenses, see if that helps.

Thanks we'll try that, your probably right as i imagine a few of the cd's he's put on recently have been a bit dusty.

I'll let you know if this works. Out of interest which lense would application cd's use? ie i've just tried to use the interactive owners info disc that came with the new car and thats not being read either

Many Thanks

J

Cool

Doesn't matter what is on the disk, it is either a CD or a DVD, music data etc make no difference, at least to my knowledge anyway, just make sure the lens cleaner does BOTH CD and DVD, you may only intend to clean the CD, BUT by the sheer fact that these are in the same drive both will be done at the same time albeit in passing, I mention this just incase there are such things as specific for Cd's, or DVDs on their own if you follow me.

BTW if you get in the habit of wiping the dirty disks prior to inserting them you will minimise the need for this in the future.
