Cool DVD/CD Not Recognised

Yelp,

I have a system with 2 x XP environments installed, one as a backup source. From the backup env. I see and play all on the DVD and review files via Windows Exp. etc. On the live system it does not recognise DVD or CD disks. I have unloaded CD/DVD device and reloaded to no effect, removed H/W let it rebuild and try again, again no effect. Some S/W installed it would appear has caused this at some point but I have removed all that could effect it without success. As mentioned all works fine in the other env. so is not H/W related.

Any help work be appreciated, esp. registry type entries which I am not aware of.

System AMD 2g, 512mb RAM, 80gb HDD, 1x DVD/CD.

OS XP SP2 and updates, 2 versions on same HDD 1 for backup.

Thanks very much in advance

Del

Thanks for prompt reply Raffaz,

No virtual devices, had Roxio products ie INCD, but removed all of that. I fear that something in the registry is setup wrong but need pointers as to where to look. Thanks once again.

No Filters as suggested:

Dai,

Thanks very much for the pointer, whilst this did appear to have great merit, unfortunately when I looked in the area suggested the were no Upper or Lower filters as suggested. In other areas there were these type filters, with Redbook.sys from MS being quite prominent. Any more advice along these same lines I am sure will be the answer and would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dai,

Have tried that but the system restore apparently has failed entries and thus system will not restore back to known good point. I will clean this for future but it unfortunately will not help at this stage. When you need it it's never there - Parkinsons Law.

Burning Software

Dai,

As initially prescribed I have removed all burning/CD/DVD related software. The system should be clean of all CD specific S/W, from this point I should be able to access a CD containing copied files via Windows Explorer, which I can't. It does not recognise the CD and keeps insisting I load a disc. Yet, from the other system, ie. Backup environment as mention in thread 1, I can read/play CD and DVD which is recognised as soon as I insert a disc. Hope this adds some information for you to go on.
Thanks once again

How about doing a repair install booting from the XP CD
If you have sp2 you might need to slipstream the CD with sp2, articles and links on this forum for that under thetrouble tips and hints.

if you do decide to do the repair install
boot from CD, don't choose repir console but install, hit F8 for license agreement. You will then be asked which of your 2 installs you want to repair. Choose the one which has the problem, select r to repair it and then wait while it rebuilds the OS. It won't or shouldn't affect any installation or files on your PC, just rebuild the hardware leaving the rest alone

don't forget that you will probably need to download latest updates after this
repair.
