DVD-ROM Problem

My DVD-ROM will play certain DVDs and wont play others. When I put in a disk that it can't read, it pops up a message reading:

"Windows cannot read from this disk, the disk may be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows"

Can I fix this problem without buying a new DVD-ROM Drive?

Its a Compaq DVD-ROM SD-C2512.

I've tried both HP and Windows, neither helped.

so far its only been doing that with DVDs. I have no problem with CDs.

Recently, a DVD-ROM game gave me the same message. at first it was only like that with movies.

it works on another computer. but what do you mean by the DVD laser being gone?

I dont think ive overworked the drive or physically damaged it in some way. and it was manufactured in 2001.

burnt out, they can go at any time
try blowing the drive out with canned air and cleaning the laser
they are dirt cheap compared to 5 yrs ago,for the cost of the air and cleaning fluid you can just about pick up a new one
