New DVD drive freezes randomly when reading new disc

I have a Pioneer DVR-710 DVD/CD writer that I am having some trouble with.

Since I installed it according to the manufacturer's instructions, about 50% of the time that I put a new disc into the drive, Windows XP freezes up entirely. Also, since installing the drive, I've noticed that my other drive (listed as HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B) now has the same problem, which leads to:

ALSO, since installing my drive, everytime I reboot my computer, Windows somehow reinstalls my previous drive...which is no longer there, and which I try to remove from the software of my computer thoroughly. This drive (AXV CD/DVD-ROM, according to my computer) has caused me a great deal of headaches....

Does anyone have a solution to this problem? My brother says that the 'ghost' of the previous drive (that is, the leftover programming that I can't seem to remove) is causing an Input/Output conflict or something. I don't know for sure.

set the new drive as master and the rom as slave
check you are using an 80 wire ide cable on them
then go into the device manager and uninstall all that are listed
reboot and see what the devive manager lists that windows reinstalls
