Question Mixing Old And New

I have just replaced one of my optical drives with a nice new one from Lite-on
This required the fitting of a new cable (80) conductor.
The problem I have now is that when I connect my other drive to this cable the computer fails to boot. Any help would be really appreciated.

Mixing old and new

The other drive is a Sony DVD RW internalunit.

check the jumpers on both drives
master on the end of the cable
slave to the middle plug
