NEC burner can no longer be seen and causes crash
While trying to burn a CD last night my drive would not auto run. In fact I could no longer see my burner. I opened up my box and it seemed like my cable was pulled out a bit. I shut down my PC and pulled out the jumper cable and pushed it back in to make sure that it was fully connected. I then rebooted my PC and logged in to windows and then my system crashed. I tried again and it crashed again. I then unhooked the jumper cable and rebooted and everything came up. When I went in to my computer it said I know have a floppy drive. I have never had one. I then reconnected the jumper to see if windows would see it. It crashed my system. It just froze up. The Drive opens and closes and the light comes on like it is trying to read a disk. I have a NEC ATA model 3540-A. I am running windows XP.

Not sure, but you may still have a device connection problem from the look of it. I would check all the cable connections inside the box again, and make sure they are properly firmly connected.
Sidenote: Most devices have a power cable and a bus (sometimes called controller - the ribbon looking type) cable. The word jumper is reserved for a small plastic metal piece that is placed on certain pins on the device (usually near where the bus and power cables hook up). A jumper is primarily used to tell the computer where that device is on the cable ie, at the end (a master) or in the middle (a slave). |

Thanks for the reply! Sorry I used the wrong term I was talking about the Ribbon cable. Brain fried from work I will check the cables again and make sure everything is tight. Any idea why it would tell me I have a floppy drive when I have never had on hooked up?

No prob, hope you can figure it out. I've had it happen a few times where I was sure I had put the cables in right, and my stubborness cost me time. Now I check a few times without hesitation if I have to. About the cable, yeah I knew what ya meant, just thought I'd give ya a little more background info for future reference. As for the that floppy symptom, I have no idea.
