Basically, both my CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives stop working. They open, but when I put ANY type of media in either one (audio CD, software, DVD, etc.), it's not detected. Apparently Windows successfully loaded the device driver, but "cannot find the hardware device (Code 41)".
Perhaps I need to uninstall the drivers? Or does this require a complete hardware replacement? Buy the way, I'm using Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 and the computer's a Sony Vaio PCV-RZ54G. Thanks.

What these two files do, is they control the 'seeing' of the devices in the registry. When you delete them and immediately reboot, Windows® will detect them again as 'New Hardware' and reinstall them with the generic drivers. Once you do this, you will also need to reinstall your CD burning program/s, i.e: Nero™. Try the workaround and post back with how you get on.

Wow. It worked. Both my drives are working again.
You guys saved me twice already. I couldn't thank you enough. Mind if I ask one question? Not too sure if I should be asking here or in another forum, but I have an old HDD that died a year ago. Now since I have only one HDD on my computer (the new HDD), I was wondering if there's anyway I could install the old, "dead" one as a slave and extract files from it. Provided that my old HDD doesn't seem to be too badly damaged (it just stopped booting the system). |

Hi Deranged Soul,
Glad we got that one sorted ...now for your other query....Yes, you can try installing it as a "Slave" and if all goes well [the BIOS recognising it] you should be on your way. Let the computer boot up with the 'crook' Drive as a "Slave", it will then install it and you should be able to get access to your files and remove them from it. Good Luck with it, and please post back with how you get on.

Alright, I set up the old HDD as a Slave, according the jumper settings for this particular HDD.
The new, already installed HDD is set to Master. I tried booting and I don't get past my 'SONY' loading screen. But I know for sure the new HDD is the boot HDD because I don't hear any odd noises from the old HDD (which was why is got scrapped). I checked to make sure the new one was set to Master and the old one was set to Slave. Could the problem be that they are two different HDD brands? The new HDD is a Maxtor and the old HDD is a Western Digital. |
