PNY 512mb Attache issues
First, thank you to all who attempt to help me out here. This isn't a life or death issue, but one I would like to figure out none the less.
I have a PNY attache flash drive. I mainly use it to bring documents back and forth from work and home. However, I have a much faster internet connection at work and as such, I tend to download little movie clips and other things at work and try to bring them home to share with my family, as to not eat up bandwith at home. When at work, my computer there reads and writes data to the flash drive w/o problem. However, when I get it home it tends to have problems. Some files will work just fine, opening w/o any problems. But then there are some files that will never or rarely open, and if I try to open them, the files that opened fine before will no longer open correctly. At first I thought there may have been bad sectors on the flash drive, but if it works fine at my work computer I don't see that being an issue. I'm really at a loss here as to what can be causing this issue. Also, both computers (home and work) are running XP and both have all the service packs and updates. |

Are these problems occurring when you open the files directly from the flash drive, or after the files have been copied to your computer? Does this only happen with specific file formats? Are there any error messages that occur when a file fails to open, or does it simply hang indefinitely without executing?

If I copy a file to the hard drive, it will open fine. However, the problem is that those files that sometimes won't open on the flash drive, also won't copy to my hard drive. As you mentioned, they kinda just "hang there" not doing anyhting, or soemtimes I will get a message saying that the device is not responding (the flash drive is not responding).
AS for file formats, it has been many things that have done it so far, from PDF, AVI, MPEG, WMV, JPEG, and MP3s. I did notice that if I were to format the flash drive and copy only 1 file, being one that had given me trble before, it would still have the problem. SO it may be something with the individual files that is interacting with my USB reading. Lastly, I tested the USB drive on another computer at a friend's house and all files, even those that would "hang" on me before were read and opened fine on his computer. |

It is starting to sound like an issue with the USB ports on your computer. Are you plugging your key into USB ports at the front or back of your computer? If you're plugging it into the front, try plugging it into the back and see if this is helps as some implementations of front USB ports, being connected through extra wiring and what-not, are not as stable as the straight-to-PCB ports on the back. Are you using built-in USB ports, or through a PCI card? Are you using USB 1.1 or 2?

I have used both the front and rear USB ports on the computer. The ports are integrated directly into the Motherboard, and are USB 2.0.
I have also tried removing all other USB devices to see if one is conflicting with the flash drive, but it was no help either. |
