DVD/CD burner broken

Since my last reformat, my CD/DVD burner hasn't functioned properly. I've tried Nero and Roxio, then realized the problem appears to be with the drive itself. I'm using a TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R5002, and for reading/playing CD's and DVD's it works wonderfully. When I insert a CD-R or DVD-R, however, it doesn't register the blank disk. I don't even know where to begin trying to fix this, so any help is appreciated. I'm currently running Windows XP Professional, if you need any system specs let me know.
