My CD-ROM doesn't detect CDs.

Hey, I'm new to these forums. I just installed Windows XP Professional SP2 and so far it's working great. One small problem though: My CD-ROM (Sony CD-RW CRX140E) doesn't detect CDs. I was unsuccessful in finding drivers FOR WINDOWS XP. I was trying to install Call of Duty 1 and it doesn't get detected. I then tried putting in Counter-Strike: Anthology and that doesn't work either. There is no error message. My CD-ROM detected CDs in Windows 98 Second Edition (my previous OS), but I don't want to downgrade to that just because my CD-ROM is messed up! Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi there Death, welcome to TSF...

Have you tried reinstalling the device? Or updating the drivers with any others that Windows can find?

Well, right now I am installing America's Army, so I can try all that stuff in about 30 or so minutes. One thing that I though of though, was that PowerISO was the problem. Is this possible?

Don't think there's a link but anything's possible, what made you think of PowerISO as the cause?

Did you try going into your bios to see if its detected there?
Depending on your motherboard press the del key repeatedly, right after you press the power button on your comp. until a menu comes up. Im not too good at explaining stuff like that but if you cant find it in your bios, make sure all your cables are properly connected and pushed in all the way.

It appears in my BIOS. I will check to see if the cables are properly hooked up. I will check for music CDs later.

Edit: Music CDs won't work. I will have to get my dad to see if the cables are pushed all the way in, or if the CD-ROM is over and I have to put my other one in.

Thanks for the link :) . Anyways, my dad is going to buy a new one anyways, since mine was only like 32x or 36x, I forget. The recording speed was 8x and the rewriting speed was 4x, so it's best just to get a new one, since it will most likely be recognized by Windows XP right off the bat :) . Thanks all for your help.

Yeah that one is pretty old, It's best to just get a new cd burner, they run about 50 bucks for a new one.

You may want to consider looking for a DVD burner as well. They are very affordable now a days, and you can find them for as little as 30-50 dollars. It's great to have that option as well, especially for backing data up if you don't have a spare harddrive.
