DVD players freeze on play
I just upgraded my PC with a WriteMaster dvd combo drive and tried to play a DVD for the first time today. The drive has worked perfectly for every task thus far, its connected as the solo drive on my secondary IDE port/cable. I threw in Billy Bob's new movie Chrystal which is an official DVD, it asked me how it should handle it and i clicked for it to play through windows media player. It says loading menu, in the playlist says menu and then title #1-9(or so) but then does nothing else. I got a couple shareware DVD players off the net and they all freeze when i load a DVD to play. I can see the title of the DVD, labelled with the DVD symbol in my computer, and can even explore the DVD. Where does the problem lie? To me it seems like its not the DVD software itself but something else..
thanks for reading

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Then just reboot your computer. Note: This is a "harmless" registry change. The filters will simply be reset at the next boot. They can, however, become corrupted -- that's why this fixes a lot of CD/DVD access/writing/reading issues. didnt work ? try : http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d...cd_dvd_fix.htm |

ok purplesky i understand what you're saying but when I attempt to locate and delete that entry i find that I have ControlSet001 and 003, I had a single harddrive for a long time then added a new 300gig so perhaps this represents both harddrives? Thats relatively insignificant though because when I find the 4D36E965 entry and delete it, regardless of 001 or 003, it says simply 'there was an error deleting 4D36E965. I checked the properties and opened up the permissions for all people to access and still I couldnt delete, so i rebooted in safe mode and still i could not delete either entry. Any suggestions?

I googled my problem a little more and i realized that I only need to delete what some guys calls "just the Upper and Lower Filter values" not the whole key. But unfortunately he doesnt elaborate as to which values should be zapped. I see (default), class, enumproppages32, icon, installer32, noinstallclass, silentinstall, troubleshooter-0. Then inside 4D36E965 there is a folder called 0000 within which is another called digital audio wihtin which are many values like CDDAAccurate, CDDASupported, NumberOfBuffers, etc.
again, which values get deleted?? thanks for the time!

DVDs and also DVD players have what is known as a DVD region. This is the location that it is designed to play in. The DVD regions are spread out through the world and range from 1 through 7 or 8 I think. This is designed so that when a movie comes out in Japan on DVD, they can't easily burn it to be played in the US so it helps prevent piracy. This usually isn't a problem, but sometimes drives require you to select your region so they can sell the same drive to Asia and the US, etc. Did you ever get anything like that? You can also look on the back of the DVD for a little square box that has a number in it, and if I remember correctly (I'm at work so I don't have a DVD box in front of me), it also looks like a globe in the background of this box.
Here are the regions: Region Countries 0 No Region Coding 1 United States of America, Canada 2 Europe, including France, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Arabia, Japan and South Africa 3 Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Borneo and Indonesia 4 Australia and New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America 5 India, Africa, Russia and former USSR countries 6 Peoples Republic of China 7 Unused 8 Airlines/Cruise Ships 9 Expansion (often used as region free) I'm guessing this is a driver or something else issue though, so try any other DVDs you have if you can. Edit: If you want to learn more about DVD Regions, check out this link: http://www.hometheaterinfo.com/dvd3.htm |
