Greetings BILLYTHEKID1971, and Welcome to TSF.
The reason that your TEAC DVD will not recognise a DVD-R is because it is only designed for DVD+R media. This link gives the specs for your DVD.... http://www.teac.co.jp/dspd/product/optical/dv-w58e.html. Some DVD's are 'dual layer' which means that they can read/write to both types of media [ DVD+R ; DVD-R]; however, in your case its only DVD+R.

Quick correction, dual layer DVDs are the 8.5 GB ones, the drives that are DVD±RW are multiformat.

Can you tell us what dvd+r and -r means? a different format, but what? I bought a bargain dvd player from ...(edited out the name of the store)..., and when I got home with it wouldn't play all dvd's.

conflicting documentation?
I, too, am having this repeated problem with my TEAC on a Dell Dimension 3000! I believe once or twice I HAVE been able to read a DVD-R, but rarely.
chauffeur2 - you noted that it's only designed for DVD+R media. The link you provided somewhat confuses me. Although DVD-R is not listed under Applicable Disc Formats, a Rotational Speed is given for DVD-R. At http://support.ap.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/p60337/en/specs.htm, Dell lists these: CD-DA, CD-ROM Mode 1 and Mode 2, CD-ROM XA Mode 2 (Form 1, Form 2), Single and Multi-session Photo CD, Video CD, CD-I, CD-Text, Enhanced CD, CD-R, CD-RW, High Speed CD-RW, Ultra Speed CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD+R/DVD+RW, DVD-R/DVD-RW (read only) as compatible disc standards. So I'm a little confused? Should it or should it not read DVD-R? Unfortunately, Dell's support has been no help. I downloaded some sort of firmware update, but it hasn't helped. When I insert a DVD-R, my computer does NOTHING. I can move my cursor around, but I cannot open any programs. Even after I remove the DVD-R from the drive, the computer still won't respond. I usually have to manually shut it down by holding in the power button. This is causing me a HUGE problem because I have a client who sends hundreds of photos (jpg) to me on DVD-Rs. Is there something she can do on her end when burning the DVD-Rs? Any help you can give is greatly appreciated! I've been struggling with this for too long. Katie |
