The darndest thing
(This is a question that deals with a dvd player, dvd burner, and a soundcard. I decided to post in here, because it's the burner that caused the problem)
Hello. I just bought a pioneer 111d dvd burner. I upgraded from a cd burner. And I also have a dvd drive. I uninstalled the cd burners drivers, and shut down. And connected the pioneer. When doing this, it no longer reads my dvd drive. My dvd drive would be drive D, and it should make my dvd burner drive E. I uninstalled the dvd burner. Rebooted. My dvd drive was again visible in drive D. I connected the pioneer burner again..and again, it over reads the dvd drive. Now this isn't even the part that bothers me. I don't like my dvd drive anyway, it's old and doesn't work very well. I'm going to upgrade in the future, so this will be bothersome soon. But the part I'm concerned about is my soundcard. I have a soundblaster audigy 2 zs platinum. I've had no problems with it, until I started messing with the drives. The soundcard works fine. The inputs I think is where I'm having the problem. I've tried connecting using the auxillary ports and the guitar jack port, but it doesn't read any of the sound. I've tried checking all the connections, and they're all tight. I even uninstalled both the dvd drive and the dvd burner. And still it doesn't work. I've been working on this for hours, and any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks. |

First thing would be to make sure the correct input (recording) source is selected and that it is not on mute. I don't think it is connected to the DVD drives.
As for the drives, make sure that the jumpers are correct. The one on the connector furthest from the motherboard is the master, the other one should be the slave. |

Last resort for a sound card for me would be to uninstall the drivers, shut down windows, take out the card and boot to windows again to find your onboard sound (this should indicate whether it's anything else causing it too). Then install the card as instructed in the manual (driver first then card I presume). It's basically a fresh install of everything and should work with your current hardware setup. Make sure the card in in it's slot properly too so that the golden finger does not show, this could cause the card to malfunction or not work at all. This should take all of ten minutes. Hope it works.
Try whardman's solution first. Here's a picture of the jumpers he/she refers to: ![]() ![]() I personally would set them up using master-slave configurations and not cable select. The red stripe on the cable should be on the right when it's plugged in as you look at the back of the drive. Please don't hesitate to post back with further questions if any of this is unclear. Good luck!

I got everything working. I really love this forum!
I have just a couple quick questions. I have my dvd drive as master, and my dvd burner as slave. Now I would think that the master would be the D drive, and the slave would be the E drive, but it's vice versa. Should the master be alphabetically first, or should it be last? Or doesn't it matter? I know it's dumb and unimportant..I would just really like to know. Also, my dvd burner has 5 sets of jumper pins, unlike the 3 sets in the VERY helpful illustration you gave. I just moved the shunt one set to the left, like in the illustration. I believe this is the correct position, since it seems to be working just fine now. But what are the other jumper pins for? Thank you very much!

Not sure about the other pins, all the optical drives I've every had have had three sets. If it ain't broke though, don't mess with it.
