how to diagnose dvd rom?

i think my liteon dvd-rom is getting a little bit crappy these days. it does not eject when i press the button. is there a diagnostics for dvd-rom? and will a crappy dvd-rom make you system crash?

see if your device manager has it listed correctly, without any yellow conflict symbols.

no, as Dai suggested, the lens or motor could be dusty/dirty or just breaking down.
