CD/DVD burner quit working
My CD/DVD burner has partially quit working. It plays CD's and DVD's, but won't write. Device Manager sees the drive and says it is operating normally. When I fire up burner applications, they give an error like "No compatible recordable device can be found on system." Am running Windows XP Home Edition.

CDrom devices either work or they don't. You may try removing and reseating the cables or hunt round the net for some diagnosic software.
But as a general rule these things are not user serviceable. DO NOT open it up and have a fiddle remember there's a laser in there!!! The quick and easy solution is chuck it out and get a new one.

I don't think it is HW. Rather something in SW. It was working a month ago. I tried the 314060 fix from Microsoft - decription below... but no better.
