[SOLVED] My pc starts and boots like an old car.

hi all, i have this problem that my pc boot like an old car..
here is my specs.

dual core 3ghz
3gb ddr2 ram
1gb geforce9400
160gb harddisk
p5kpl-am motherboard
500w PSU

when i overclock my system at first it went well.. then after i idle it a while.. it lags and freezes, sometimes.. i was thinking what seems to be the problem.
i reboot it then i play my game (farcry 2, lineage2 and assasins creed).. it crashes and reboot like an old car. so i reset all to defaults in my bios. well i get the same thing quite sometimes when iam in multi tasking with my applications, (photoshop, autocad and ff and chrome etc.) even if i have a default settings. maybe its my psu that lacks a power supply in my system or a compatability issue. please help.
(it starts crashing when i change my video card from 256mb to 1 gb)

good day all.

I have just check on the info on your graphics card. it is isn't powerful enough to run your graphics card and system in an overclocked state.

Can you go into your bios and post your temps and voltages?

Re: My pc starts and boots like an old car.

I would avoid overclocking as it can cause the sortof problems you are getting.
A 500w paoer supply is not adequate for yor system. i would try a 1000watt PSU.

you don't need a 1000w psu for that system. Power supply wattage isn't the most important part it's amperage which is important.

The poster PSU doesn't not have enough amps to support the overclock and grahics card he needs a good quality power supply from seasonic or corsair and he needs atleast 650w

Re: My pc starts and boots like an old car.

This is the temp and voltage in my bios..
cpu temp 83c
mb temp 38c
vcore 1.280v
3.3v voltage [3.328v]
5v voltage - [5.196v]
12v voltage - [12.091v]

so i need a new psu at least 650w and higher? if ill get a 1000w is it good enough to power up my overclock system and wont get crashes anymore?

Re: My pc starts and boots like an old car.

get the one I mentioned this will run your system fine you don't need 1000w psu.

your cpu temperature is far too high. You need to clean the heatsink and fan with compressed air and make sure the heatsink and fan is attached correctly. you cpu temp should not be above 60 degrees c.

Getting a new power supply will help but you will need to make sure the heatsink and fan is attached correctly, if it is I recommend taking the heatsink off and cleaning the cpu and heatsink with 90% isopropyl alcohol and reapplying thermal paste.

Are you using a stock heatsink?

yes i have a stock heatsink.. and my thermal paste kinda wear off.
i recall when my pc is in overclocked state, my cpu temp reaches 93c.

you shouldn't be overclocking with a stock heatsink that is what aftermarket heatsinks are for.

you are damaging your cpu because it is getting too hot. Your cpu should not get above 60 degrees c when it is at full load.

you either need to dumb down your overclock and reapply the thermal paste (after cleaning it off with 90% isopropyl alcohol on the cpu and fan) or get an aftermarket cpu cooler and reapply the paste.

aswell as getting a new psu.

If you continue to use the pc when it getting that hot you will end up with a cpu that does not work anymore and a motherboard the catches fire because it will get burned.

Re: My pc starts and boots like an old car.

650 watts is the one you want. Get some new thermal compound. GreenBruceLee is correct. Sorry to butt in but i figured id second he notion on the 650 watt PSU. I would not go any highe than 750 though. Thats WAY more than enough to run that system.

I run an Asus with SLI'd Nvidia video cards and i have a 750w. As far as the slow-ness, it would definitely be inadequate PSU, especially when overclocking the card.

I had a CPU that melted through a motherboard. Bruce is right.
