Blown Capacitor, PSU dead?

Wondering if anyone had any advice besides replacing the PSU. I haven't had a chance to examine the computer too much because I've been studying for a midterm. But anyways, I was on the computer, and then I heard a pop, and I smelled burnt capacitor. Then my surge protector immediately started beeping due to my PSU overdrawing power. It seems that the computer is able to turn on (somewhat). I can turn the computer on for about 10 seconds and all the fans spin, etc., but my surge protector beeps at me again. Any advice?

Re: Blown Capacitor, PSU dead?

My advice is not to try to run that dude with a bum capacitor or you risk even more damage than you already have (and we are not sure how much damage you have yet). I don't think you would be wise to do anything in this case except replace the power supply, unless you don't value your other components.

I agree but you may also have to replace the mobo too.

Re: Blown Capacitor, PSU dead?

I did a cursory inspection of the motherboard for any leaking/blown/bulging capacitors and shorts, but I didn't really see anything wrong. It was only like a 5 minute inspection though. Does anyone know what Enermax's policy is on RMA's? I've had the PSU for about 4 years; it's a 1000W Enermax Galaxy. Don't really want to just trash it because it cost quite a bit.

Re: Blown Capacitor, PSU dead?

I doubt that the Enermax warranty extended beyond 3 yrs. There website tells you everything about it except the warranty so contacting would seem to be the only way to find out.
