Hi, I've had my computer for a while now. But recently i bought new parts. a Coolermaster Hyper L3 CPU Cooler, OCZ DDR2 800MHz Titanium Ram.
My Specs: Mid Tower Case, Asus P5KPL-CM, Intel Core 2 Duo E7300, Coolermaster Hyper L3, Asus ATI HD 4550, OCZ DDR2 800MHs Titanium 4GB Dual Channel, 1x IBM Darkstar 250 GB SATA, 1x Western Digital Caviar 300 GB IDE, 1x Generic 40 GB IDE (All HDDs are 7,200 rpm), Viewsonic 22in WS Monitor, Cordless Desktop Wave Pro, Logitech Inspire T10s. My Problem: My computer keeps freezing randomly. The mouse dosen't move, any streaming audio just cuts, everything litereally, fully freezes. There's nothing i can do about it. It's Not to do with the OS because it freezes even in the BIOS, or the Boot Screen, and even in Safe Mode. HARDWARE PROBLEM. What I've Done: To check if it was the hard drives, i unplugged them and put them on an alternate computer. There were fine. To test the RAM, all i have done is put one stick in, and then try the other stick, it seemed to freeze faster. to see if it was the CPU Fan, i went in BIOS (before it froze) and set all the CPU Fan Speeds to Full with Asus Q-Fan Off. Still, the problem persists. I've tried to boot from something else too. I've unplugged all my hard drives but the C, but still the same thing. To check if it was that i was having a power shortage, i went to multiple online power supply wattage calculators, they all say well under my one (Generic 450W). And also, The longer i leave it off, the longer it will last, before it freezes, the next time i boot. So its most likely a thermal problem. I've Bought new thermal paste too, still, the same prioblem. Conclusion: This has been going on for about a month now and is driving me up walls. PLEASE HELP ME. P.S Pros Prefered |

Re: HELP Random Lock-ups, can't do anything, nothing in logs.
PSUs aren't all about wattage. You need minimum 26A available on the +12V rails combined. Read the PSU sticky: Power Supply Information and Selection

Re: HELP Random Lock-ups, can't do anything, nothing in logs.
check the ram with memtest86 aswell, locks up and freezes are relate to psu and ram problems.
you are underpowered as said above so you need to replace that for certain but use memtest to test the ram to determin ram issues.

Re: HELP Random Lock-ups, can't do anything, nothing in logs.
Did the problems start after you installed the new heatsink & RAM?
Are you certain the heatsink is properly secured to the Mobo? Have you checked your Temps & Votages in the Bios? Have you tried using your old RAM to see if the problem persists? You need to replace the PSU with a quality unit with sufficient power.

Re: HELP Random Lock-ups, can't do anything, nothing in logs.
Wow, very quick responses. Anyways, the thing is, i can't really do anything. i get in, MSN Boots, Everything is ready, and then, if i leave it for a minute, it freezes, if i do something, it freezes, i dont have time even for memory tests, i and i dont have any other computers in my house than run DDR2 Memory. If it is my power supply, Please confirm it with evidence, i do no want for folk out a hundred bucks and find my computer's still screwed. and it happened AFTER i installed the ram. but the ram it was running fine for about a month after installing new parts.

Power Supply Information and Selection
generics in this country are usually crap,3 months ago you would not have found one for under $150.00 i see they have come down to $108 see if you can borrow one to check with

Memtest doesn't need to be run in Windows. You download the ISO image, burn it to CD and boot off it, and it does the rest for you. Link in my sig.
Double check your RAM timings and voltage in the BIOS are correct before you run Memtest. If it locks up during Memtest the biggest suspect would be the PSU. |

Re: HELP Random Lock-ups, can't do anything, nothing in logs.
Just a thought from a AMD novlist who is haveing close to the same problem.
Recheck your New CPU cooler. You might not have added enough or too much silver past. Its happened to me. I thought I had enough on mine, and it froze alot. Took it off looked at it and i dont know how but there was alot less there then when I had installed it. I could even make out my finger print were the past had kinda wandered away. |

Re: HELP Random Lock-ups, can't do anything, nothing in logs.
Thank You for all your Help, This is what I've Done, I took the Seasonic 300W PSU out of an old computer, hooked up all my 4pin peripherals up to the seasonic, I couldnt do the Mother board because it was 24 pin, and this old seasonic PSU is 20 pin, I got a 4Pin to Sata converter that i found, hooked them up, and then i bent a paper clip around to rejoin the green and black wire sockets in the seasonic's motherboard cable so it will actually start too. It worked wonders! It is totally fine now, that is how i confirmed it was the PSU, I'm gonna go buy a new PSU tomorrow! Thank-You You've Been really helpful!
