Ram for HP a1210n

Getting ready to add ram to a HP Pavilion Desktop a1210n running XP.
It has 512 PC 3200 DDR 400 in it and two extra slots. Should I just get the old standard of 1 to 2 GB of PC 3200 DDR 400. Or should I look at the DDR3, if the PC mother board can support it?
Thanks,
Gene

Re: Ram for HP a1210n

You can not use DDR3 RAM.
You can use DDR2 800 (PC6400)
Best solution, discard the RAM you have and get a matched pair of 2 X 1GB or 2 X 2GB of DDR2800.

Re: Ram for HP a1210n

My apologies! I looked up the wrong PC!!!!!
You DO need PC3200. Mixing RAM brands can cause a LOT of issues.
You "shouldn't" need to clear the CMOS.

Re: Ram for HP a1210n

OK,
That clears it up for me. Thank you for the correction.
Should I install the 1GB in the 1st slot, and 256 in the 2nd slot and 256 in the 3rd slot. or should I leave the 256 ram where it is and install the 1GB in the 3rd slot?

Re: Ram for HP a1210n

We never suggest mixing RAM brands but I would try the 1GB in the first slot and leave the other sticks out until you are certain the 1GB stick is good. If all goes well, add ONE stick at a time and let it run for awhile to be certain there are no conflicts.
Again, my apologies for the misinformation!.
