Ram problem

We had 4 gb of this RAM. Soon after about 1 year later, we noticed a booting problem. At one point the PC just didnt show anything on the screen at all. Then we removed 1 gb of RAM. Suprisingly, the pc booted. We thought we had these problems because of this faulty 1 gb RAM. After a 2 weeks, Guess what? We again continued to have more problems. So after a bit of experiments, we saw that the pc works with 1 gb of RAM only. How sad. What could be the problem? Before my uncle could play crysis. But with 1 gb of RAM? I doubt crysis could handle that on vista.

Suggestions appriciated.

Re: Ram problem

Test your RAM one stick at a time using a Memtest CD.

Direct link to pre-compiled bootable ISO: http://www.memtest.org/download/4.00...+-4.00.iso.zip

Unzip the file and burn the ISO to CD (as an image, not as data) to create a bootable CD. SAB Totally Free Burner is very easy to use, just click the BIN/ISO icon to burn. Reboot and go into the BIOS. Change the boot order to 'CD first', save settings, insert the CD and reboot. This will start the program. Run for one stick at a time (very important, to prevent false readings) for at least 10 passes each.

Re: Ram problem

Just a quick question. I have the latest UBUNTU live CD. When it boots, there is a memery test option. Can I use that instead?

Thanks

Re: Ram problem

The memory test on the Ubuntu Live CD is actually the same as memtest, so that will save you having to download and burn the ISO. It will keep testing until you tell it to stop, so leave it running for a few hours for each stick.
