Fallout 3 causes my system to lock up

Hey,

While playing Fallout 3, my computer randomly locks-up. By that, I can't do anything except restart my computer. Not even my G15 clock works. No other game does this, and I've tried the game on both Vista Home Premium 64-bit and 7 Ultimate RC and both with and without the DLC. No pattern exists with the lock up, sometimes I can play for hours, other times it locks up within 2 minutes of starting the game.

Any fixes?

Two fixes:

First, Fallout 3 has an issue with FFDshow for some reason, and often causes lockups like you describe. I suspect it's the cause of your immediate issue. Add Fallout 3 as an exception to FFDshow, or remove it.

Second, Huntkey power supplies are literally some of the worst available. Their GreenStar and VPower PSUs will explode if pushed to deliver more than 80% of their rated power, and their other lines, though they don't explode, still have horrible efficiency, terrible noise suppression, poor power distribution, and low-quality internal parts. Though I doubt it's the cause of your lockups I would strongly recommend replacing the Huntkey with a quality power supply. A quality 550-650W unit should be ample. I would recommend a Corsair TX650W.

Didn't know Huntkey PSUs were so bad, I'll pick up another one as soon as I can.

I seemed to have fixed the problem by going to fallout.ini and changing

bUseThreadedAI=0

to 1 and adding

Code:

iNumHWThreads=2

after it. I'm not sure if it's a definite fix, but it got me past where I was locking up (the birthday party at the start).

Fallout 3 is a very strange game. There are a dozen things that sometimes cause instability, and sometimes don't, and there are dozens of reported fixes involving the config files. It's a great game, but it has a lot of issues.

When you do get a new power supply, make sure it's a good one. Read this primer: Power Supply Information and Selection
We recommend PSUs from Corsair, SeaSonic, CWT, and PC Power and Cooling. Also the CoolerMaster Real Power Pro line (NOT the eXtreme Power ones) and Thermaltake Toughpower line (NOT the PurePower ones).

By that, I can't do anything except restart my computer. Not even my G15 clock works. No other game does this, and I've tried the game on both Vista Home Premium 64-bit and 7 Ultimate RC and both with and without the DLC. No pattern exists with the lock up, sometimes I can play for hours, other times it locks up within 2 minutes of starting the game. Any fixes? Thanks in advance.
