It is up and running... Poorly! Where do I go from here?
I put together PC's for myself, family and friends. I ended up with a few parts leftover and they seemed to enough to make a PC that could at least run World of Warcraft optimally. Obviously Optimal is not what happened, but I am unsure of where to go for help. I have always put together things that I knew worked together well. This is the first time that I didn't listen to the little techie in my head. I am hoping I am just missing something simple.
Case: Thermatake WingRS100 http://www.compusa.com/applications/...428&CatId=1842 MotherBoard: Intel DG41RQ http://www.compusa.com/applications/...117&CatId=1572 Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5 http://www.compusa.com/applications/...u=CP1-PD-E5200 Hard Drives: 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250 GB http://www.compusa.com/applications/...457&CatId=2458 RAM: 2x Corsair XMS2 1024MB matched memory http://www.compusa.com/applications/...27141&CatId=10 Power Supply: Thermaltake TR2-430 http://www.compusa.com/applications/...9575&CatId=106 I loaded Windows 7 Beta just to see what flavor of Vista it really was. I was able to set up the RAID (mirrored) without any issues. It ran just fine no issues, no worries. Of course I wasn't doing anything with it either. I then found a Leadtek PX9600GT video Card, and thought why not add this to the PC and it can just be a WoW machine. WoW Recommended Specs: --OS: Windows XP / Windows Vista (with latest Service Packs) --Processor: Dual-core processor, such as the Intel Pentium D --Memory: 1 GB RAM (2 GB for Vista users) --Video: 3D graphics processor with Vertex and Pixel Shader capability with 128 MB VRAM Such as a NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT class card or better --Sound: DirectX-compatible sound card or motherboard sound capability http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath/faq.xml#1_22 Video Card: Leadtek PX9600 GT Extreme http://www.leadtek.com/eng/3d_graphi...&pronameid=410 Brief overview - Win7 and WoW (no Addons, 60fps in Dalaran (lag intensive area)) it is working perfectly... -Problem 1: Beta of Win7 would not allow for updates and continually interrupted WoW with a please authenticate Win7 every two hours. There was no way to authenticate Win7 and it hasn't been released for purchase yet. -Soluton 1: Install Windows XP, then install Vista Business (Upgrade) and all updates to SP2 + (I have Microsoft Action Pack from my MCSE Days) --Problem 2: The PC seems to in a constant state of stutter. 8-12 FPS in WoW and all Graphics seem to have a cyclical chop to them. (note: Didn't install the RAID this time during XP install, Win7 had nvidia drivers so I didn't update them from Leadtek.com or from nVidia.com, but I did use both Manufacturer and Vendor drivers with Vista as it didn't recognize the card. This is when the stutter stepping seemed to start. In my experience there are three places to start looking for the culprit. 1) memory settings 2) Power Supply underpowered, Possible BIOS misconfiguration. I have done what little I know how to do and have not been able to produce a desireable result. --Solution 2: (this is what I need help finding, if you could point me to the right forum help I would appreciate it.) Thanks, Kevin |

Re: It is up and running... Poorly! Where do I go from here?
First, you are underpowered and have a low quality PSU.
A 9600GT needs a minimum of 300 to 400W, depending on what version you have. If your card had a 6-pin power connector it needs 400W. I would suggest a 550W or 650W if your GPU has the 6-pin connector. Edit: dai betat me to it.

Re: It is up and running... Poorly! Where do I go from here?
Here is the update.
It seems that the stutter is greatly reduced, the FPS (frames per second) has not changed at all. It also doesn't change regardless of the video setting in game being changed. I do get a message about the video recovering from an error (nvlddmkm). I am not finding any rhyme or reason for this error. As this Powersupply is from the same PC that the Graphics card was in previously, an AMD 64x2 and it checks out with a volt meter (not a thorough test by any means). I am again unsure which direction to take. If there is some utility that I can install to monitor any of the voltages or video functions please let me know. I am just used to always using Asus, EVGA or Gigabyte and matching my components from the start. Thanks Kevin Last edited by WiFiTech; 10-15-2009 at 07:20 AM. |

Re: It is up and running... Poorly! Where do I go from here?
Okay, I have not had the chance to pick up a new power supply as of yet, and I am unsure of how to see what the temp of the video card CPU is. I did download RightMark.Org's CPU Clock Utility and Running DDO (Dungeons & Dragons Online) the CPU is only at 44.2 C core temp. However, the video (running DDO in windows mode 1024x768) it is still stuttering. I did install the 191. drivers from the nVidia Website yesterday, and did notice slightly worse performance. I will post more info as I get it, also I can record the desktop and link the video if that would help.

Use gpu-z for video card info, including temps.

Re: It is up and running... Poorly! Where do I go from here?
Okay here is the status update so far.
Case: Thermatake WingRS100 http://www.compusa.com/applications/...428&CatId=1842 MotherBoard: Intel DG41RQ http://www.compusa.com/applications/...117&CatId=1572 Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5 http://www.compusa.com/applications/...u=CP1-PD-E5200 Hard Drives: 1x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250 GB http://www.compusa.com/applications/...457&CatId=2458 RAM: 2x Corsair XMS2 1024MB matched memory http://www.compusa.com/applications/...27141&CatId=10 Power Supply: Silencer 610 EPS12V http://www.pcpower.com/power-supply/...10-eps12v.html Video Card: Leadtek PX9600 GT Extreme http://www.leadtek.com/eng/3d_graphi...&pronameid=410 DRIVER 191.07 I installed GPU-Z Date,--GPU Core Clock [MHz] , GPU Mem Clock [MHz] , GPU Temp [°C] , Fan Speed [%] , 2009-11-07 17:57:44 , 650.0 , 900.0 , 67.0 , 47 , It is not crashing the video Driver nearly as often but I am getting the stutter, and every several minutes a 3-5 second hang. I am going to pick up a new Video Card and Power Supply from CompUsa/TigerDirect or another vendor if anyone has suggestions. FYI below are the specs of what I am trying to build Ultimately. Motherboard EVGA P55 FTW http://www.compusa.com/applications/...734&CatId=4720 Processor Intel Core i5 750 2.6 (I will upgrade it down the road) http://www.compusa.com/applications/...3&Sku=I69-0750 Video Card EVGA 260GTX (X2) http://www.compusa.com/applications/...251&CatId=3585 I am just not sure what to get for a Power Supply - Leaning towards Corsair 750+ let me know what you have and how it is working out.

Re: It is up and running... Poorly! Where do I go from here?
on idle power consumption is low but skyrockets under load
i would run a 850w corsair http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...nc.-_-17139009 it's only $10 dearer after rebates than the 750w
