gateway laptop ram issues

I have a gateway mx3230 laptop, fsb 400mhz ums motherboard w/vn800 chipset running windows xp and have the basic 256mb ram chip. I have purchased 2 other chips (pny and ultra)at 1gb each, which my cocumentation says is the max (1gb). neither chip will work. when i install either one the system will not boot. one chip is a variable speed and the other is a standard 533mhz. has anyone any suggestions?

Re: gateway laptop ram issues

Are you trying to use the new RAM with the old RAM?

Go to Crucial and see what is suggested for your laptop.

Re: gateway laptop ram issues

You need PC2-4200 memory.
I am not sure what type of memory you purchased.
