[SOLVED] Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
Well for the past couple weeks ago I have been having some weird problems and they appear to be getting worse. It is always while gaming in full screen so far and has not happened while i am doing anything else.
I will be playing a game and it will jsut randomly shut off. I turn it back on and it works fine for a bit then it does it again. I turn it on and it starts but i noticed that the fan on the processor is not spinning. it shuts itself off after about 5 seconds. If i let it sit for a while and start it up again everything runs normal until some gaming when the same thing happens again. I have checked my tempuratures using the speedfan program and they are all immaculate. Specs: ASUS M2N-E SLI AM2 NVIDIA nForce 500 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor 2.6GHz Socket AM2 89W Dual-Core Processor GeForce 9800gtx+ Mad Dog 550 Watts PSU thanks for help all |

Re: Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
Hi -
Please follow the instructions --> BSOD Posting Instructions Zip up the resulting folder and attach to your next post. The fan problem sounds power related - like PSU? I can look at dumps for software problems, but they will not tell us much about hardware failure in general. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Hi,
Did you tried installing & working the same application in other system. If the same problem happen in the other system means then the application is the problem.

Re: Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
It has done it in two separate games.
I could attach the PERFMON file w.o any problems but the tsf file hangs for a bit and then says upload of file failed So i uploaded it to sendspace. http://www.sendspace.com/file/iq1njj Thanks for your help everyone!! Also, there is a button on the back of my PSU. you push it and it goes between three settings. A, S, and T. The color of the light on the PSU changes when you push it to. Blue, green, and red. This is a psu from a friend and I have no idea what these three options do. If it's important, I've had it on A for as long as I've had the PSU. Last edited by xanafeyed; 09-30-2009 at 03:32 PM. |

Re: Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
According to the dumps, you haven't had a BSOD since May 16...and that was a
I believe that it's the way that you're having a hardware compatibility issues because you're on "service pack 0". Please download and install SP1: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Once SP1 finishes, do SP2: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Let us know how the system runs after that. |

Re: Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
went all day today fine. froze when i started wow. had to hard reset. comp turned on and kept running but there was nothing on the monitor and no beep codes.
upgrading vista right now is probably not going to happen. i preordered win 7 though. how sure are you that it is a OS problem and not a hardware error? i have not changed any major hardware since the new video card over the summer. i have not had any problems until about a week ago. |

Re: Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
I'm not sure that it's compatibility, but I do believe that it is. Your should at least be on SP1 before we point our fingers at hardware. Your system not being up-to-date could (and in most cases does) absolutely be causing your problems.
I still recommend upgrading to SP1 and SP2. |

Re: Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
Just tried again. Same thing. CPU fan is spinning. Video card fan is spinning. Everything looks fine but i get no signal on the monitor. Given what I have said so far, what is the most likely solution?
Should I take it somewhere to get looked at? I have always been against that considering I have always been able to fix it myself. I am pretty much out of answers though now. |

Re: Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
Took it somewhere and the guy told me it was the motherboard. a shotty plug. so the whole thing must be replaced. He didn't charge me anything to look at it though and said the processor looks to be fine.
I think it's the plug that connects to the processor fan. It would shut off and the processor would quickly overheat causing the shutdowns. that sound right to you guys? |

Re: Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
I do think it sounds right, in fact I was about to post the same thing before I even read your last post.
The motherboard, as you may know, distributes the power to all of the main system components - CPU, the CPU fan, RAM, etc. The fan not spinning some of the time is a clear sign of a motherboard failing. |

Re: Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
hey sorry to bump this post but i figured that better than starting a new one. With the motherboard and a new tower (my old one is a bit of an eyesore) in the mail i thought i would start taking apart my old pc while i waited. I have just removed my heatsink and processor and was wondering how often if ever that thermal paste stuff needs to be reapplied.
I have had the same processor and mobo for two years now so it has not been moved or changed since then. thanks |

Re: Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
It shouldn't be necessary ro reapply it, but you have to put it on when you install it. Make sure you get all of the old thermal paste off of the CPU and heatsink before you put on new thermal paste.

Re: Random shutdowns in vista while gaming
Thought i'd tell you good call on the PSU. It was too old and would not power up the mobo. Not the wattage but the plugs to plug it into the mobo. Got a nice new one and im zoomin now.
