[SOLVED] 8Gb Memory Trouble OCZ with GA-N680SLI-DQ6
Hello this is my first post on tech support forums, and im very impressed by all the help people have been getting here!
Although this time im the one with a problem so hopefully you can work me through this. Recently i upgraded to a full version of windows 7 Professional 64bit (my uni gives it out oem via msndaa early) I can also boot Windows XP 32 bit, but im liking 7 ![]() Onto my problem. My current motherboard (GA-N680SLI-DQ6) I bought a 4 x 2Gb OCZ Gold Ram kit, its ment to run at 800 DDR2 The timings for this ram is 5-5-5-15 voltage is 1.8 OR 1.9 as i read on the OCZ site, im running it at 1.9 just to be safe. Note i have correctly set the ram settings ![]() Now whenever i have all 4 sticks plugged into my board, i bsod, on startup or few seconds after startup in 7 (64bit) and XP (32bit) if i take 2 sticks out and just run 4gb it works fine no trouble. Its only when i have 3 or 4 sticks in my computer has trouble. I have tested each stick individually and tried re seating each of them etc. I have also run memtest on each stick individually and they each work fiine, memtest also works fine with 2 sticks. Soon as 3 or 4 its error city I do believe this motherboard has an nvidia chip set on it, and i have heard somthing about u have to increase the voltage to the nvidia chip or somthing like that im unsure...my motherboard is rated to take 8gb of ram Can anyone help me with this issue, im not OCing anything my system currently stands at: Motherboard: GA-N680SLI-DQ6 (gigabyte "6 quad") PSU: 1000wat Antec (im really sure its not a psu supply issue lol) CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66ghz GPU: EVGA Geforce 285GTX 2.0Gb RAM: 2 x 2 Gb OCZ gold DDR2 800 HD: 1 x 500gb, 1 x 320gb, 1 x 500gb external and about 9 usb devices Thankyou for your help in advance |

Re: 8Gb Memory Trouble OCZ with GA-N680SLI-DQ6
Ive been looking around for a solution to this, i may have to increase voltage to the "northbridge" but im afraid i may brake somthing in the process. Is there anyway to determin how much extra voltage i should give it?

Re: 8Gb Memory Trouble OCZ with GA-N680SLI-DQ6
Some boards are picky on having all four memory slots populated, and nVidia chipset
ones are the pickiest. You are much better off using two sticks, you most likely aren't going to use more than 4GB of ram at any time. Increasing the ram voltage can help when all the slots are in use, but you are already at 1.9v. Going over the manufacturer's specs for voltage isn't a good idea, ram is quite sensitive. Performance ram is usually rated for around 2.1v. for ddr2, that might run stable with the extra voltage, or might not, depending on the motherboard.

Re: 8Gb Memory Trouble OCZ with GA-N680SLI-DQ6
Its a shame really i cant get this to work
windows 7 does use quite a bit of ram as i have all the fancy "stuff" turned on. 3DS Studio Max and Adobe After Effects are two programs a regularly use, oh and AutoCad, and they all hog ram, so it would be great if i could get the 8gb working. The OCZ site said the ram should be 1.8 but can be set 1.9 without voiding warrenty. It seems to run more stable on 1.9 anyway so i will leave that.By increasing the northbridge by 0.10 i actually got into windows without bsoding but i locked up after 30 seconds. Im not sure. If anybody knows anything about getting nvidia chipsets working with 4 sticks please reply. http://www.ocztechnology.com/product...c_dual_channel Thankyou for your reply i will be running 2 x 2gb for the time being. |

Re: 8Gb Memory Trouble OCZ with GA-N680SLI-DQ6
Filling all the RAM slots on any Mobo can cause Voltage issue.
I doubt the problem is with the RAM and the Nvidia chip not getting along. Intel CPU's however do prefer Intel chipsets. 4GB of RAM is more than plenty. The Voltage rating on RAM is the maximum suggested settings. That RAM is 1.8V but has a 1.9V Extended Voltage Protection. Using Voltage over 1.9V voids the warranty.

Re: 8Gb Memory Trouble OCZ with GA-N680SLI-DQ6
The Nvida 6xxi and 7xxi chipsets need the northbridge voltage increased slightly to run ram in all the slots this how ever causes the NB to run hotter and self destruct, I don't recommend doing it at all.
What specific part number OCZ ram did you get? |

Re: 8Gb Memory Trouble OCZ with GA-N680SLI-DQ6
Sorry, will give you the number when i get home, at uni atm, thanks for your help, and the northbridge seems to have pipe cooling on top of it on the motherboard, it dosnt warn me when i turn up the voltage on it either, but im not going to fiddle with it yet. Thanks again for the reply!

Re: 8Gb Memory Trouble OCZ with GA-N680SLI-DQ6
I checked in the OCZ configuration utility and they do not have a recommended 2gig stick for that board(not a big surprise) which usually means they have had too many issues to recommend a part number stick and have warranty compatibility.
http://memoryselector.cnetchannel.co...odel_id=529595 For what it's worth I have had luck and no luck with these on Asus 680i boards but have never tried it on the Gigabyte, not to sound pessimistic but after the last 780i build last year I don't use them any longer too many hoops to jump through to get them to work properly, I've found that if you build it and it runs good for a week it's a winner it you have any issues after assembly it's all down hill from there. http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=189 |

Re: 8Gb Memory Trouble OCZ with GA-N680SLI-DQ6
Gah thats bad news, thanks for all your help, its such a pain in the but these nForce boards!
This is the second time i have had so much trouble with gigabyte boards in particular, but im sure im just having a bad run with them. One more question - in the bios to increase the northbridge the ONLY option for voltage with NB in its name was: NB/PCI-E the motherboard warning message was that I may "damage PCI-E devices by increasing the voltage" is this what i need to be increasing? and will/could damage my brand new 285GTX? Im tempted to just upgrade to the I7 board and DDR3 ram, and leave it alone, its annoying when you waste money ![]() will be consolting this website before i buy next time! |

Re: 8Gb Memory Trouble OCZ with GA-N680SLI-DQ6
That's the one, the card will probably take it but the NB will run hot and cause errors.
As a stop gap I would look for a P35/P45 board, the i7 8xx on P55 boards looks very promising(with turbo mode it out preforms the 920) but it's too early in their life cycle to jump on them in my opinion. |

EVGA makes great Video Cards, but pass on their motrherboards, Asus or Gigabyte> http://www.itsdirect.com.au/com_prod...Suits_Core_i7_
But before you jump on the 1366 system have a look at these comparisons. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu..._15.html#sect0 http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...review-17.html |
