Tower wont load up

I was watching something on my tower and the picture froze. I could hear a clicking noise from the tower like a clock. Not heard it since.
I tried turning it back on and i get the message choices of
safe mode
safe mode networking
safe mode command promp
last known...................
start windows normally
niether work, i get as far as the bit before you see the word Windows (loading up).
I got another message of \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Its an Athlon XP 1800+ i think its about 7 years old.

Thanks for helping.

Re: Tower wont load up

Ticking like a clock may be the hard drive, just a shot in the dark without hearing it myself.
try using the repair console on your XP installation disk and run it.
If you cannot boot into any mode this may be your only route.
If that does not work and worst comes to worst then you may need to do a clean install formatting from a boot floppy then installing from the cd.

I had got another HD in as slave, took it out and when the Windows thing comes up the blue knight rider thing went accross the screen more times, still crashed, but instead of freezing the computer restarted itself.
I havn't got the original disk, can i use one from a totally different PC?

Posting the PC specs as I requested in Post #3 might help us to determine your problem.
Knowing what hardware we are dealing with is always helpful.

American Megatrends AMIBIOS (c) 2001
NVRAM
AMD Athlon (tm) xp 1800+

Re: Tower wont load up

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
I have seen before.
The only way i was ever able to address it was to run repair console if unable to boot into any mode.
I think what Tyree is reffering to is that a proprietory computer?
Meaning Dell, HP, Emachine etc and if so what model?
If you know someone with an XP disk try repair and see if it helps.
now HOW the file got corrupt and the noise your hearing may be directly connected.
since you don't really know your hardware and can't boot to get the info I'd try the repair.

The propriotor is Athlon, the model is 1800+.
Ive got an eMachines tower and cd's and luckily it looks like its rebooting the complete HD/PC. The Athlon HD wasn't being used anyway.

Thanks for your help guys!

Re: Tower wont load up

Are those CD's yours from that computer?
If not they may not work, they are created to work on the specific system they were sold for.
who is the manufacturer of the Athlon system?
I missed what OS is it running?
in some cases it has required a clean install to fix the issue.
Take a look here this seems to explain the process I have had to go through before.

CD's were from another computer.
I can't see anything that resembles any sign of a manufacturer, must be a made-up pc, got it from a market.
OS = XP.
Thanks for the link, where/how can i get a cd with windows xp on it?

If you plan on keeping that system for awhile your going to eventually need its own XP disks anyways.
