BIG power supplies ????

I always reed that in today's computing, we need BIG power supplies but it's really interesting, I see a lot of good commuter's selling with very low watts can you please explain why? For example on Newegg this computer, it only has 250 watts and it is a very good pc, so do we need big power supplies or not?

thank you

Re: BIG power supplies ????

You link only leads to a page full of some special deals on NewEgg. Don't know what rig you are looking at with a power supply like that.

Re: BIG power supplies ????

They can get away with a crap PSU because there's no real graphics card in there--just an Intel 4500 something chipset. The reason you need "big" power supplies now is for when you have high-end gaming graphics cards, which can need between 550 and 750w PSUs to run stably, and for SLI and CrossFire we recommend 850-1000w. The Dell doesn't have those massive power demands, and so can get away with a 250w PSU, though I'd use at least 350-400 if it were my computer.

It's more than just wattage that matters, however. You must also take into account amps on the +12V rail, the efficiency, what type of PFC it has, if it has one +12V rail or multiple, what protections it has, and if the manufacturer is reputable. Read the thread at the top of this forum for more information.
