Too many programs running at start up

My sister's Dell 1150 takes a long time to start up and I have been told that it could be too many programs running at start up and using most of the RAM memory. How do I check to see if this is the case. Windows XP is the operating system.

Re: Too many programs running at start up

Hello Tatty and welcome.

Firstly the slow issues could be an infection and I would certainly visit the forums security section and have the system checked out.

Ok lets see.

Click start/right click on my computer and choose properties how much RAM/memory is listed there?

Click start/open run box and type in msconfig and hit ok.

Under startup tab you can uncheck such items as MSN,Yahoo etc but not windows processes.

Click start/click on my computer/right click on C: drive and choose properties/how much free space is listed and how big is the hard drive, how much free space is there?

If you could list her hardware such as CPU etc this may also help.

But my first port of call would be for you to visit the forums security section.

Re: Too many programs running at start up

I ran msconfig and machine is running better. A virus scan was done a few days ago and a trojan was found so as suggested I went to the security forum and the instructions for a virus search were very complicated and way above my head, but I will print instructions out and see if I dare have a go. Jelly Bean asked if I could list hardware such as CPU but I don't know how to find it. All in all, Dacads and Jelly Bean you have been great help. Thanks

Run Malwarebytes. It's free and it's the best thing I've found for finding infections.
