Abit AV8 Ram Upgrade 3Dimm issue

I have 3 1GB low density DIMMs. The board has 4slots memory slots. Currently I have tested 2 1GB dimms in Slot 1 and 2 and they work. However if I put the 3rd one in slot 3 the board hangs with Code 0.4 which looked up is a memory error. I got the same error before when I tried to put in high density DIMMs.

Do I need to go out and buy a 4th DIMMs to utilized the 3rd one? or is there a problem with my MOBO likely? or should I narrow down the issue as a possilbly a problem with the 3rd dimm? I have tested thoughily the other 2 with memtest86.

Have you tried the 3rd stick by itself or with one of the other sticks to be certain it's not at fault?

Re: Abit AV8 Ram Upgrade 3Dimm issue

I'm currently running the memtest86 with the 3rd piece of ram in slot 2. I have a known good one sitting out. However it already has gotten farther with the ram sitting in there than it did with the ram than it did when I had all 3 in the box. So far the ram looks fine.

You asked for specs... hmm
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/116/1/

I currently have it running at 1839Mhz Athlon chip. When it gets to Windows it is running XP. But the problem occurred above before getting to the OS.

Re: Abit AV8 Ram Upgrade 3Dimm issue

you know I'm reading my book of specs... I think I really do have to buy a 4th module to utilize the 3rd one. I only got a 3rd one buy a mistake of the seller. I returned defective product, and kept a good one. They sent not one replacement, but two.

However now to what the specs actually say:

At the top the caption reads: To reach the performance of dual-channel:
'When installing TWO DIMM Modules'...

'When installing FOUR DIMM Modules': of the same size and type...

Re: Abit AV8 Ram Upgrade 3Dimm issue

You should be able to use 3 sticks but they won't be in dual channel unless they are matched, that's why they sent you 2 sticks or a matched pair.
More then likely you'll have to bump the voltage up a tad on the ram to get more them 2 to run.

My opinion is your better off with 2 Gig in dual channel then 3 gig in single channel.

Re: Abit AV8 Ram Upgrade 3Dimm issue

so lets say I did get the 4th dimm. Would I have to bump the voltage up? how would I do that? I am aware the XP will only read about 3.5gb and not the whole 4.

Re: Abit AV8 Ram Upgrade 3Dimm issue

You would do it in the Bios, but the chance of finding a matching stick are slim.

Re: Abit AV8 Ram Upgrade 3Dimm issue

Might be, might not. If it's the exact model number, and it's manufacture date is nearish, might be a good chance. The ram manufacturers don't make the chips on the stick. They can use chips from different suppliers on the same model of ram, and then the odds of dual channel go way down.

Re: Abit AV8 Ram Upgrade 3Dimm issue

Your saying if I want to be perfect. I should match the same exact brand as well. Than I have super-talent. Which appears you can only buy in bulk but may be able to find. Or may be able to buy another from the supplier that sold me in the first place.

Alright... I was a little hesitant. But I'll inquire of the supplier of how much it would be to get a 4th one from them, which would let them know they gave me 3 of them. I'm not sure it was intended.
