Hey all, my computer sometimes will just randomly reboot and when it starts back up ill get the windows encountered an error, send error report blah blah.
Now i have a suspicion that it may have been to a dodgy Wireless USB drive, but i just replaced that anyway and got a Wireless Network card. I ran a memory test using MEMTEST86+ and at Test 5 and Test 7 it will encounter errors, sometinhg like 3000?. Now i have 2x512mb DDR PC3200 Geil sticks in. I pull one out, run the test nothing. I do the same with the other, nothing. i try changing them in a different slot, nothing? but when they are both in together i get errors? There is one slot i havent tried, but ill get to trying that. If its showing up a whole lot of errors in MEMTEST does that usually mean a memory stick is a DUD? and why would it only do it when there both in? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

Re: Failing MEMTEST
Geil RAM can be VERY flaky. I had a pair of PC3200 Golden Dragon that would do precisely what you described. They might work perfect for some time and then give me problems. I gave them to a friend who has used them, without issue,on an old Soyo Mobo, for almost a year.

Re: Failing MEMTEST
the dump indicates the reboot was caused by a system file (rdbss.sys) you can use the sfc command (System File Checker tool ) to scan the system.
start -> run, and type: sfc /scanonce then reboot and the scan will start. note you may be asked for the windows install CD if you don't have it handy then don't use sfc. as for the ram, have both sticks been in use for awhile? what are the details for your pc? (brand/model--else mobo, video, psu models). also see the link in my sig about ram testing.

Re: Failing MEMTEST
Thanks for the replies.
The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8S648FX-L CPU: Intel P4 2.6GHZ Video: AGP Elsa Falcox 9200 (Radeon) Memory: 2x512mb PC3200 DDR RAM HDD: 1X 200GB PATA MAXTOR, 1X Seagate 500gb PATA PCI Slots: Wireless Network Card ASUS PSU: 350W Eagle And i don't have a Windows CD, i originally bought a HP computer, and XP was on a partion of the drive and i never had a CD. The new hard drive i used a friends Windows disc to install as i couldnt figure out how to get XP off my partion. |

Re: Failing MEMTEST
Memtest86+ is the recommended version. The original Memtest86 hasn't been kept up to date and is reportedly unreliable in some situations.
next topic -------------------------------------- That rdbss.sys driver interracts with the I/O, Cache, and Memory Managers, and other systems so I suggest it be removed and xp will replace it with the backup copy. Download HijackThis Installer and install it. Close all programs, as the pc will be rebooted when done. 1. Goto Start menu and run HiJacjThis 2. Click button: Open the Misc Tools section 3. Click button: Delete a file on reboot... 4. A file box will appear, paste the line below to File Name: and click open, and reboot. C:\windows\system32\rdbss.sys now you can test the ram.

Re: Failing MEMTEST
Thanks all for the replies, i followed what you said. also tried a different ram slot, haven't re-ran memtest just yet, but so far no reboots which is good :).
Just a question, How did you find that "rdbss.sys" was a result, i downloaded windows Debug and Symbols, I opened the crash dump with it and all it told me was "Probably caused by : win32k.sys ( win32k!HeavyAllocPool+1a )" and some other stuff but no mention of "rdbss.sys". Just asking because im trying to learn a bit more about computers, and the more knowledge tghe better, if you could get back to me i would be very very appreciatve. cheers. |
