[SOLVED] PSU emits high pitched noise
I have a new generic (no brand) PSU and it works fine, the voltages are OK but it emits a constant and even high pitched noise.
Should I RMA it or can this be normal in some cases? Thanks |

Re: PSU emits high pitched noise
agreed, definetly return it.
at the very least it's advertised as a Silent PSU and you didn't get that. it may only be a squeaky fan, or it may be a leaking power capacitor heading for catastrophic failure--so don't use it!

![]() I stopped using the computer until the new PSU comes. What I don't understand, though the voltages were OK and the system was working fine, the noise means that the PSU is likely to fail or is failing? Many thanks |

Re: PSU emits high pitched noise
As Stu so rightly points out, a very good possibility is that a capacitor may be leaking. If that's the case, it will blow at some point, and when a psu goes, it can take other components out with it. It's not worth the chance. Power supplies don't last forever, and that one sounds like it's moved well up the expiry date list.
