Computer doesn't want to boot properly
my computer is a gateway gm-5084 model.
I had a 600w power supply. 2 ide drives 1 sata drive bfg 8800 ocx card 3 gigs of ram The problem was I came home to my computer and tv internet and cable all of. I was able to reset the circuit breaker. Everything came back but my computer. Now I have a large surge protect for my tv, bluray player,xbox360, and a wii. I have another slightly smaller one for just the computer. Now neither surge protect triped and both are on the same circuit. Thinking it must be the power supply, I removed the 600w, my video card and my sata drive an reinstalled the orginal one. Luckly I had a full os freshly instaled on one of the ide drives before I added the sata and started using it. The computer would power up for a sec or two then power back off. I removed everything except the cpu and it would boot longer before getting error for no ram in the system. I added the stick in one by one testing each as I went and all would post fine. I then added in the ide drive with the os on it and it booted up. I used windwos 7 for about 20 minutes. Left the computer on and went to bed. Next morning it was off. I turned it back on and it shut off at the"starting windows" screen. I have messed around with it some more since I got home from work and It will run forever until I try to boot into windows. I also tried safe mode with no luck. I also used windows 7 startup recovry option to repair anything prevent a startup and it will shut off about have way through when it is making repairs. So Now I am lost and I did try the 600w psu again and it is dead will not even power the computer one. Any ideas of where to look next besides a new computer would be great. Thanks |

Re: Computer doesn't want to boot properly
Power supply is a 600w OCZ gamer series. The Video Card is a BFG Force 8800 OCX. I removed the video card and was using my on board video. I have tried a couple different power strips and outlets. The power supply is only about 8 months old and no longer works.
When I hooked up the old power supply the machine did boot from one of the other hard drives that use to be the main drive with an os on it. I had to repair the startup files as windows 7 calls it since I had to remove the sata drive that had the os I was currently using and it was still in a dual boot between the two drives. Windows 7 did boot and I used it for about 20 Minutes before I went to bed. Now whenever I start to load windows or run the startup repair the computer just shuts off. I am starting to think its a problem with the processor since it only seems to shut off when there is a cpu load on the system. I can hang out in the bios or in the boot menu all day with out it shutting off. |

Re: Computer doesn't want to boot properly
That is a symptom of a failing Power supply the load from the drives spinning up and the drivers loading need more power and it's not supplying it.
