added 2GB of RAM (issues??)

I have 4 slots, 3 slots are occupied with 1GB in each for a total of 3GB. I installed a stick of 2GB for a total of 5GB. The PC boots up normally. Once completely booted up and the desktop is visible, the video flickers, system freezes for a second or two and lound screaching sounds come from the PC speakers.

When I view the system information, it does actualy show a total of 5GB of RAM installed.

When I remove the stick of 2GB all goes back to normal.

According to crucial.com, one of the recommended modules was the following:
2GB 240-pin unbuffered DIMM 256Mx64 DDR2 PC2-5300.

This is the memory I installed and gave me the problems. Do I need to reset the CMOS? Is the memory simply bad?

Here are my system specs:

Acer Aspire M5100 desktop
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0Ghz Dual Core
Vista Home Premium 64bit SP2
BFG 8800GT OC 512MB
3GB (1GB x 3) Nanya 1GB 2RX8 PC2 5300U 555-12-E1 667
500GB SATA 7200rpm
500Watt PSU
20 inch LCD display - LG

Update:

So I tested out the 1 stick of new memory alone, and I have the same problem. System still freezes within a minute or two after boot has completed.

Prior to the system freezing up, I checked the system info and the 2GB do get registered, but the problems persist.

Today, I picked up an additional 2GB and installed both sticks for a total of 4GB's and I still have the same problem.

What I don't get is that within the www.crucial.com website, those modules are suppose to be compatible with my system.

Any advice on how to resolve this would be most appreciated.

check the voltage range at crucial the m/b may default to low

The voltage range on crucial shows 1.8v. How do I change the voltage on the M/B?

Here is some more info:

Present ram that is working: 3 modules - Nanya Technology (1GB DDR2 PC2-5300 667 240pin)
Ram that causes issues: 2 modules - Crucial (2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 667 240pin)

your computer will run quicker with just the crucial in
in dual mode without the 1g stick in

try to keep your ram in matching pairs

I've tried the crucial ram alone, still have issues. Mind you, they were not bought in pairs but in two separate occasions, but the outcome is the same nonetheless. I've tried one alone and still have problems.

Any other ideas what it might be?
