Expansion of RAM

Hi, I have some problem regarding the memory expansion.I have two memory slots in which 512 mb initally installed in slot A and slot B is empty and i have ordered for 1 Gb (kingston). Should the sytstem will read 1 gb mem or the total ( 512 mb + 1024 mb) maximum expandabitly of ram is 4GB.

System Specs:

System Model : Toshiba Satellite A100
OS : Window vista ultimate
Processor : 1.85 gigahertz Intel Core Duo
Main Circuit Board : Board: Intel Corporation CAPELL VALLEY(NAPA) CRB
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies LTD 6.00
Hard disk volume: 80 GB
Memory modules: 510 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot 'M1' has 512 MB
Slot 'M2' is Empty
System memory: standard : 512 MB
maximum expandability : 4,096 MB
technology : DDR2 RAM (533 MHz)
Dual functional enable
Please suggest.

better remove the 512mb and get 2 of 1gb

most stuff can be run with 2gb ram.. while with 1,5gb you'll always have problems with something

You're best using the 1GB alone, without the other 512MB. If you were to use both, you will probably find that your computer wont boot (due to compatibility issues).

You can try running both sticks, but chances are they will not play well together. I recommend using the 1GB stick alone as MaverickUK suggested.

Thanks for all the post and suggestion .. i have decided to standalone with 1 GB for better performance of my notebook.
