Power Supply Unit

I have a HP. Nice machine. The problem began a while back. Whenever I unplugged the machine, the green light in back blinked for quite some time, then went solid green and everything was fine. The plastic switch button is quirky and, at times, when I powered it up, it would shut back down until I hit the button where it came back out and it powered up fine.

About a week ago, we had a blistering thunderstorm where the transformer behind my house took a direct hit. That evening, when I got home from work, the green light was blinking. I unplugged everything for about an hour, but no luck.

I unplugged the psu from the mb and the light went solid green. I pulled the psu out of the machine, tripped the black and green with a paper clip and it fired right up. I went ahead and plugged it back into the mb, tripped it with the paper clip, and everything works fine, including all the hardware. Of course, now I cannot power down the computer with the switch.

The one thing I noticed since I did this is the computer sounds like it wants to switch between hibernate and power up. This happened when I was able to power up the computer using the switch.

Was the thunderstorm a coincidence? Do I have a bad accessory pin that, all along, was going bad?
