First of all I am sorry if this query has been posted for the nth time, but I really do need some help/advice concerning my rig. As the title goes my computer suddenly dies on me for no apparent reason. Sometimes my PC would go on for days without any problems, yet, there are times, like today, when my computer dies on me once to three times in a row. Usually the series of blackouts happen when I am playing online games. The computer will suddenly die and when I turn the power back on it will only show the graphic card i am using and won't POST, so I have to turn it off and on once again. The second and third "death" happens when I try to open any application after a successful reboot, though, there were times when it dies during startup.
Here's my rig: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 OC'd to 2.8Ghz Zalman CNPS7000C-Alcu cooler MSI G31-VM Motherboard 2 x 1 Gb Samsung DDR2-800 Nvidia 8400GS Western Digital 250 Gb Harddisk 450 watts PSU Is the power supply the reason? Should I buy one with a higher wattage? Or can it be any other part? Please help me... |

Re: Computer Suddenly Dies
Core 2 Duo E6550 65Watts, Nvidia 8400GS 71watts, that's a static 10Amps draw from the 12V rail for those two items alone.
Helios 450HW, it's what i call pentium 3 era psu. Manufacturing Company Yeeun Rated output 450W +12 V output 24A +5 V output 35A +3.3 V output 30A CORSAIR Model CMPSU-450VX Maximum Power 450W +12V output 33A +5 V output 20A +3.3 V output 20A see the difference compared to quality pentium 4 technology psu? the amps available on the 12V rail is always higher than the +3.3, 5V rails.

Re: Computer Suddenly Dies
There are lots of brands available here mostly China/Korea brands. LG, A-One, GMC, NewZen, and Asus to name a few. I tried looking at the online shopping site here and compared the +12v DC max of various brands and I discovered that many of the PSU worth $70 or more only has +12v 19A to 24A whereas those worth $35 have +12v1 30A. I'm a bit confused about this. By the way, some have this +12v1 and +12v2, can someone shed a light please?
