Warning Message: Not enough RAM

Morning all, a newbie here, still kicking & screaming into the 21stC.

I've been getting pop ups, with a little, yellow, warning triangle, from my PC saying that I don't have much virtual memory left. And then, while saving a Word doc yesterday, another warning message to say that I had little RAM left.

I don't know what either of these means, except that there's a problem with the memory! I'm running Windows XP, but don't know about my RAM capacity.

Where do I go to find my RAM status? Can I clean up (defreg??) my machine, would that help.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks.

Emma.

Re: Warning Message: Not enough RAM

Right clik "My Computer" and clik "Properties". The popup box will have the amount of RAM listed toward the right lower corner.
CCleaner is a good free app for general cleaning and Defraggler is a good free Defragging software.
Give this a read for a better understanding;

Re: Warning Message: Not enough RAM

Hi Tyree, thanks for your post. V. useful. 512MB RAM. Should this be enough for someone who isn't into graphics, gaming etc?

Thanks,
Emma.

It really depends on what is running in the background. With xp and a fresh install, 512 is fine. As you install more software though, you will have more processes running in the background. This is what really eats up your memory.

If you go to Start > Run and type msconfig > Enter, then click startup tab it will list processes that run when windows starts. Some of these you need some you don't.

You might try disabling one's that look unnecessary and see if this speeds things up and gets rid of the virtual memory errors.

Re: Warning Message: Not enough RAM

Oh, and I cleaned up the hard disk, which has helped. But I will look at the belarc website and let you know what happened!
