re: Black screen crash is annoying me

Enter the bios setup menu and report back with the temps and voltages for this rig.

Do you know someone that you could borrow another PSU from to try in there. There are times that even new ones quit when put under heavy load. BTW, the apevia is not a great power supply to start with, it is considered a weak one IMHO.

re: Black screen crash is annoying me

well i took out my 8800gs and tried my 7600gt and it actually worked. Thing is is that i have no idea whether its the card or if its the psu not giving it it enough power because i remeber that the 7600gt uses way less power.

re: Black screen crash is annoying me

If you swapped out the video card for one that worked that takes less power, that confirms my thought that it is the power supply.

Apevia is just not a quality supply and that is common with supplies that are not quality built. While that Apevia is listed as a 620 power supply, you may not be getting more than 500 watts out of it when you factor in everything.

You need to be up here to run this video card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005

Note: Some times you can even find a Corsair 750 for about the same price, but I did not have time to check that one. Might be worth looking on NewEgg and checking. Also, if you purchased this recently, see if you can send it back and swap it for a decent power supply.

re: Black screen crash is annoying me

it doesn't make sense though. The psu was running it fine for 8 months. And the psu has about 38amps on the 12 volt rail. The minimum for the 8800gs is about 400watts and 26amps on the 12volt rail

re: Black screen crash is annoying me

new symptom fallout 3 and oblivion all run fine on the 8800gs on low - medium graphics on low res. When put on high res the computer crashes and the monitor loses signal. It looks like it might be the psu after all though i still wonder why did it run perfectly during these 8 months.

re: Black screen crash is annoying me

The way to find out is to get a good one (not an Apevia, etc) and try it in there. If it fixes it, then you are on your way and if it doesn't, then send it back for a refund. Please, don't ever purchase a piece of junk when you buy a power supply, go for one of these models:

Seasonic – Any Model
Corsair – Any Model
PC Power & Cooling – Any Model
Thermaltake – “Toughpower” Series Only
Coolermaster – “Real Power Pro” Series Only

Do let us know how it comes out for you.

re: Black screen crash is annoying me

Increasing the graphical level increases the stress on the card which also increases the power requirements for the card.
Get one of the following PSUs Tumbleweed36 has posted. Make sure it has at least 750W with 12v@32A. (Recommend 12v@40A)

Re: Black screen crash is annoying me

it's the available amps for use not what is listed on the label

there is a big difference as to whats available for use between a 70% and 80 % efficency psu that both list 38a on the 12v line
