Gateway 510S 4x RAM slots

I removed > 25 malware items from a friends old Gateway 510S and while fixing, noted computer is pretty slow, probably due to the fact he's only got 512 MB RAM installed (factory 2x 256 MB). I'd like to install additional memory, as there are still 2 slots empty. Can I simply purchase 2x 512 DDR400 and add to the existing set of 2x 256, or do I have to remove current memory? In other words, can I use all 4 RAM slots, and if so, do all 4 have to have same size RAM, or can I have 2 different matched sets of RAM in the 4 slots; 2x 256 (already there) + 2x 512 (yet to be purchased)? Thanks for your help!

Re: Gateway 510S 4x RAM slots

You could add two 512 sticks but filling all 4 RAM slots can cause problems.
I would suggest using a matching pair of 512's or 1GB sticks.

Re: Gateway 510S 4x RAM slots

Would the 2x 1GB sticks in the below link do the trick? I don't understand some of the "high-density" / "low-density" memory discussions in this forum... Is Corsair an "acceptable" manufacturer? Specs for the motherboard call for matched DDR PC3200memory; see: http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/510S...00312cl2.shtml
