PSU for ATI 4850

You'l have to bare with me as i've never done anythin like this before

A couple of weeks ago i bought a "XFX ATI HD 4850 650M 512MB DDR3 DUAL DVI TV "xXx EDITION"" so i could play a few games on the PC.

Long behold, i'd bought a card that my friends told me was good, yet now they were unsure of whether i would need a new PSU or not, and if it would actually fit in my system (mobo?) :S

Im currently on..

Dell Inspiron 530
Vista Home Prem.
Pentium Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz
2 gb RAM
G33/G31 chipset
XFX ATI Radeon 4850 (not put it in yet)

Please give me some advice on what kinda state im in haha

Maybe recommend a PSU, preferably from somewhere like PC World/Maplins as i cant be bothered to buy online again but will if necessary. Also if my PC will actually cope with the demands of the 4850 and what not.

Thanks for any help

Jack.

Re: PSU for ATI 4850

I would look for a 600W or above. I don't know what brands PC World/Maplins sells but Seasonic & Corsair are good ones.

can you give us the approximate length, width and height of your existing power supply ?

to the nearest 1/4 inch is close enough

in the UK the OCZ 700 watt seems to do very well at a reasonable price; and the OCZ unit seems to fair much better on european power voltage (230 volt)

Re: PSU for ATI 4850

I have an Asus EAH4850 gpu, and my OCZ 600w power supply is more than enough to power this card (overclocked) along with 3 internal hard drives, and an overclocked
E6850 cpu.

OCZ and Corsair power supplies are always good choices. You could just as easily get by with a good 500 watt power supply though. Tagan, OCZ, Antec, Corsair, Silverstone, Enermax, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic and Thermaltake are some of the best brands in the business and you usually can't go wrong by purchasing a power supply from one of those companies. BFG, Coolermaster and Hiper also seem to have pretty good power supplies as well, based upon some of the reviews I've read on them, but most hard core computer enthusiasts seem to go with one of the brands in my first list.

Do you think a 400w Corsair would cope, it's really only got the 4850 to deal with, everything else is standard.

Trying to keep the budget low :)

Right your all gonna hate me after this :)

Just opened my unit up again and tried to see where the card would fit in, and i do not have the faintest idea. I've taken some more pictures inside but i can honestly say ive not a clue. It also says i'd have to plug the graphics card power cord in to the PSU but there isnt even a power slot on my PSU (even though im getting a new one and wasnt planning to try it out on my current PSU)

Heres the pics, if anyone could help me decipher what goes where it would be appreciated :D

Re: PSU for ATI 4850

the black slot closest to the cpu / the correct slot has a little "tail" attached to the end of the video card slot; thats the video card lock down clip

Re: PSU for ATI 4850

Don't even think of using that card with the Bestec PSU. If you can't purchase a quality PSU at this time then leave the graphics card in the box until you can.

Im not, getting a Corsair 450w which i've been told should cope.

Also just checked on the side of the card box and it says "450 watt or greater PSU is recommended

Re: PSU for ATI 4850

All I can say is you are making a mistake putting a 450 watt power supply in with that video card. You have to choose, but I can almost guarantee that will be back shortly with video card and other issues related to purchasing a power supply that doesn't have enough "zip" to run that video card. Good luck!
